PROJECTS

Colby’s Project

NEDC was extremely excited about the opportunity to create a space for Colby where he could be in control of his environment with all the features that were important to him in it. With the support of NARI and Shawmut we wanted to make this as special a room for Colby as possible. Meeting Colby, we could see all the energy and positivity in him and we were very fortunate to have been a part of this. The plan for Colby was to create a 1st floor bedroom out of a living room so as to avoid the stairs to the 2nd floor. It was important for Colby to have his family be able to easily visit and spend time in his room. It was also important for him to have room to play and walk around in his room while still having plenty of storage and a work space. The layout for the room focused on achieved all these goals and we are thrilled he was happy with the way it came out. The wall hung work space monitor doubles as both a computer and TV screen. Colby can control it from his iPad and this was an important part of him being able to control his environment. The built-in bench by the window is a great place for his parents, brother – Hunter and grandparents to visit – and it also allows for additional storage. The main storage came from custom closets provided by California Closets – these were designed to hold everything Colby needed at hand while making it easy for him and his parents to access. Lighting was also an important aspect of Colby being able to control his room and so multiple LED lights in strategic locations were provided – all with the ability to be dimmed. Some of Colby’s favorite super heroes decals where put over large mirrors so that Colby could see himself as the persevering super hero he is, while getting help from his friends to heal in a comfortable and functional space. Seeing Colby’s ecstatic face after seeing the room was an amazing reward for all.
