Janice’s Project
NEDC recently partnered with SmartCoats and EMNARI to completely remodel a room for a child who suffers from a chronic medical condition through the Room to Dream Foundation. We worked with Janice and her family to create a separate living space within her parents’ bedroom for her to sleep, as well as updating the bedrooms of her younger and older siblings.
Janice needed to maintain the safety of sleeping next to her parents, but NEDC wanted to create the ability for her to sleep comfortably in her own area. By removing a closet, we were able to build a custom bed with storage and incorporate some of her favorite colors and a princess theme. A new light, chair, and blinds give Janice personal control over her own area. Her two siblings also received a fresh coat of paint, courtesy of Room to Dream’s exclusive paint donor, Sherwin Williams, and some personal updates to their rooms, including a study area for her older straight-A sibling. Lastly, NEDC updated safety in the house by installing smoke detectors and a new handrail at the staircase.
Janice shone brightly when the room was revealed to her, and many of the project participants were treated to a beautiful song sung by her after the reveal of her new area. The look on her and her family’s faces made the work so incredibly rewarding for everyone. It is an honor to be able to change lives through changing someone’s environment.
